MLP: FiM – Master Magess Twilight vs a Boss

This is my second submission for the Artist Training Grounds’ week 11 theme: draw a pony fighting a boss. So I’ve mentioned before how I thought Twilight was really tough and badass. And then proceeded to write/draw a bunch of stuff that basically crapped all over her. So now it’s time to own up to the badass part. Here she is fighting a boss… that is like a giant evil shadow unicorn pony… uh, thing (don’t ask, I was making it up as I went along). Anyway, this is supposed to be years down the line when Twilight has become a master magess and accumulated a few extra toys. Just look at that smug smile. Big intimidating thing? No problem! She’s got three spells (meteors, triple telekinesis and the shield) going and she’s not even breaking a sweat. The light orb is supposed to be firing some sort of beam. The dark orb and mysterious tome are just kind of sitting inert, I guess since she doesn’t want to waste magical energy overkilling the boss.

Anyway, on to the technical stuff. The light sources will haunt me forever. I had way more than I was ready to handle and what’s more, they started affected each other. I think I did a pretty good job getting it all figured out. I think. I used the usual trio of 2H-HB-2B to shade, plus managed to successfully add the 4B and make it work (I used it to shade the boss and add a bit to the finger smudged background).

MLP: FiM – Start of Nightmare Part 15

This if my first submission for the Artist Training Grounds’ week 11 theme: draw a pony fighting a boss. This actually occurs during a lull in the “boss fight” so to speak. But corrupt Twilight is strong enough to be a respectable boss for the canon main six. And the boss fight is still ongoing. I just happened to throw a flashback in. >.>

Anyway, I think I’m starting to get better at throwing random backrounds and props in, since going off of Twilight’s origin story forced me to put some of that stuff in. I’ve also found I’ve gotten a lot better at speed drawing. Going back to look at some of the other pages in this comic is… well, a little painful. On the other hand, seeing my progression from Twilight vs Twilight part 1 to this is… well, pretty unreal, to be honest.

MLP: FiM – Styled Fluttershy and Restyled WWU Twilight

Well, I finally finished this up. Thanks goes out to pageturner19088 for advising me on the cardstock method, as well as using some of Twilight’s mane to add to her bangs.

Twilight: Got her bangs mostly closer to her head through a combination of the cardstock method and hair gel. Lost the natural, fluffy look, but I think it looks marginally better. The mane still refused to stay closer to her neck, but that’s okay because I want the scarf in there anyway. Gelled up the mane to keep it from separating too much, though. If I were to redo her with a fresh toy, I’d definitely have to be more zealous about pulling and securing the hair before I cut it.

Fluttershy: This initially looked like a simple job. Boy was I wrong. Getting her out of the package was almost a task in and of itself because Hasbro decided it would be funny to tape every piece of her hair to as much of the package as possible. So she came out of the box with her hair looking like she’d been hit by a lightning bolt. Used the cardstock method, plus wrapped her long hair right around her body and it worked almost perfectly on the roots. Had to do a second boil perm after I cut her hair, though, because it was took straight. Used straws to get the curls I needed. Her right side of her mane still didn’t turn out great, but I’m not sure how that could be fixed. Oh and I spent a few hours dealing with the stupid (what I’m told is) celophane in her hair. It doesn’t not respond to boil perms. It does not respond to hair gel (very well, anyway, it kind of works). Basically it made my careful styling still look like Pinkie Pie had rubbed a bunch of balloons on her head. I finally got frusterated enough to take a pair of siscors and clip out 90% of each piece of celophane. Boy was that ever fun.

MLP: FiM – Pony Emblem Tamer Fluttershy

This is concept art for the Pony Emblem project.

Well, this was really interesting to do, even though Fluttershy’s outfit is really simple. She’s supposed to be in full heavy leather armour, although without colour, I think I made it look a bit like she’s wearing plate. She’s fully decked out because she doesn’t do any of the fighting herself and just needs to focus on not dying.

I took inspiration from the typical FE design for the wyvern, but tried to make him look a bit sleeker to fit Fluttershy’s style. This was my first time drawing a wyvern of any sort too, but I guess it turned out okay despite and that my second blunder. My second blunder is that I am a moron and detailed him AFTER Fluttershy. That made things a bit tough.

MLP: FiM – Pony Emblem Snatcher Scootaloo

This is concept art for the Pony Emblem project.

This will probably sound a bit like tooting my own horn, but man does mare Scoots look badass with just the addition of a cloak. Anyway, really simple design here. Got another pegasus running ground work too, although flying around probably wouldn’t be very subtle for the FE Thief equivalent anyway. Aside from the cloak, I added a toolbelt and metal toed and heeled horse shoes.

MLP: FiM – Pony Emblem Mage Lord Madmax Alternate

This is concept art for the Pony Emblem project.

My original design for Madmax wasn’t exactly mage like, so this is a possible alternative where I made some adjustments.

Basically, the shoes, tiara, glasses, anklet and hairstyle remained the same.

I shortened the thief coat to make it more of a thief vest, but I also retained the detached sleeves, so I guess it’s more of a short jacket. Then I added a cloak, the style of which is inspirted by Heather from FE10. I tried to keep it as simple as possible that that it was more of a thief cloak. There’s no trimming, although I used something of a ribbon to secure the cloak around her neck. I left the cloak’s clasp as a plain piece of metal. Note that the cloak is not actually see through.

MLP: FiM – Pony Emblem Speedster Dusky Down

Concept art for the Pony Emblem project.

Dusky is something of an oddball among the cast here. Speedster is actually the Myrmidon equivalent, so yes, Dusky is a pegasus ground fighter. The scarf and hairstyle are the same as her usual design. The headband and sash are Speedster standard issue gear and are there to give that sort of agile fighter feel. The vest is a leather armour that constricts her wings and is the in game reason for her staying grounded. The foreleg shoes are basically metal toed and heeled slippers (Speedsters use horseshoes, the sword equivalent).

MLP: FiM – Pony Emblem Striker Lord Applejack

Concept art for the Pony Emblem project.

This is the third promoted lord in the set and Applejack happens to fit the role quite nicely. I kept her cowgirl hat and then went for a fairly utilitarian design for the armour. She has a metal breastplate with a chainmail skirt attached to it. I needed to fit at least one piece of lord-like jewelry here, but as Applejack isn’t into the whole frou-frou thing too much, I had to think a bit. I ended up taking the Elements jewel from her Elements of Harmony necklace and placing it at the neckline of her breastplate. Turned out rather good if you ask me. The boots are more or less her work duds (although it’s hard to tell on the hind legs) with metal toes and front plating on the forelegs and metal toes and full metal heels on the hind legs (all the better to buck your face in with).

MLP: FiM – Pony Emblem Mage Lord Madmax

This is a concept piece for the Pony Emblem project for the promoted form of Madmax.

Truth be told, I’m rather nervous about this design, because Madmax is miles ahead of me as an artist. Mind, so are the artists for the canon characters, so I guess it might be because being part of the fandom makes her seem closer. Anyway, enough rambling.

Luckily a lot of her ponysona’s original design came over, so the shoes, glasses and hair elastics (and therefore, hairstyle) stayed.

The one big thing she requested was described as a “thief coat.” I took a bit of inspiration from FE10’s Volke, as might be noticed by the large collar. The rest I had to adapt to pony form, so a lot of the extra stitches and doodads didn’t really work. I added something to the waist that isn’t actually a belt. In fact, I don’t really know what it is (yay, now I’m thinking like a real JRPG designer!). Um, added some trim to the bottom and made the sleeves detached (partly inspired by the sleeves in her dancing ponysona piece). Also added a jeweled tiara and anklet for some extra “lordliness” feel.

MLP: FiM – Pony Emblem Sage Lord Twilight Sparkle

This is a concept piece for the Pony Emblem project for the promoted form of Twilight Sparkle.

She’s supposed to have some level of sun theme to indicate her allegiance to Celestia, but I didn’t want to totally destroy her usual star motif, so I did something of a mix. The edging on the robe is made to be somewhat sunlike and the large necklace has a sun embedded in it.

For her cloak I took some inspiration from her gala dress. I also ported over the star earring, but shrunk is significantly because the large version would look rather ridiculous with this outfit. Oh and super powered Twilight is not complete without her Elements crown (hopefully that fits into the sprite box when we get around to it >.>).
