MLP: FiM – Letting Her Hair Down

So this was supposed to be a quick drawing, but because I lost my ability to draw for like an hour, this ran me 3 hours using the 2H-HB-2B trio.

Anyway, I was in a bit of a design mood and I feel like I don’t really give Applejack enough drawings, so I rolled both into one. I always imagined her tail would be a little uneven if she were to let it down and I felt like giving her a different hairstyle, so that’s what happened.

For the outfit, I tried to keep true to her character, but avoid the rodeo design, since her Gala dress already did that. Instead I went with something of a sundress theme. Replaced her stetson with a sun hat (although the brim ended up being a bit shorter than I originally envisioned). Used the saddle as a starting piece and went from there. I originally thought of having a necklace or choker of some kind, but went with a more simple cloth collar tied with a bow (and attached to the saddle). For the skirt I went with a hybridization of a saddle blanket and a shorted version of the actual skirt of a sundress (although the folds ended up being quite a bit larger than what I saw online, it looked nice enough that I decided to keep it). Put some more bows on because the saddle blanket part was looking just a little too plain (a little frou-frou never hurt anyone, right?).

MLP: FiM – Twilight is Unimpressed With Me

Well, I decided to try some stylistic adjustment tonight, which means time to draw more Twi! She doesn’t seem to be too impressed that I keep experimenting on her, though.

Anyway, the experimentation was to try to incorporate some of the advice from Sessalisk’s guide into my own technique. What I ended up taking from it was to try doing a non-textured shading job for my contour layer, then darken and add texture on the second pass. This allowed me to make the fur a little more muted, but still keep the furry look. I was playing a little bit with the form of her mane, too, although I’m always doing that, really (I think I might like detailing pony manes just a little too much, hehe).

Anyway, roughly 4 hour job using the 2H-HB-2B trio.

MLP: FiM – All Good Things…

…must come to an end. Celestia of all ponies, immortal as she is, would know this only too well. I can’t imagine being her.

Anyway, this is my third submission for the Artist Training Grounds’ week 30 theme: draw a pony in the future. And my mind decided I should do something sad. So I did a comic.

I imagine (and hope) Twi would eventually get over her fear of disappointing Celestia and become a friend as well as a student. So I ran with that idea when I predicted this future.

This is a little more basic than usual, but I’ll be honest: if I used my normal shading technique, this would never get done. So cross hatching it is. I played a little with some really simple backgrounds.

Oh and thanks to Alipes for the suggestion of using a lily.

This was about a 3 hour project and while I did break out the entire 2H-HB-2B trio, the HB saw minimal use.

MLP: FiM – Professor Sparkle

Stealing Terrible Transit’s schtick tonight and adding a spur of the moment vignette:

The filly shrunk behind Professor Sparkle’s oaken desk. peeking out just enough for her eyes to flit from the masked stallion to her teacher and back again.

“Care to repeat that?” the Professor demanded forcefully enough that her student cringed.

The stallion paused, eying the purple mare up and down.

“Well?” The bunned pony peered expectantly over her glasses.

“I said out of the way, old mare!”

“No.”

“Then your life is forfeit!”

The assailant had barely taken a single step when an all consuming flash of white filled the room. When the light cleared away, the stallion lay motionless on the ground.

This is my second submission for the Artist Training Grounds’ week 30 theme: draw a pony in the future. So here’s another imagining of where Twilight might be a few decades from now. My initial idea started with her psychiatrist gag bun and glasses and was supposed to go to something resembling a wizard mantle. But then I realized everyone draws her as a wizard. So I went with something a little more academic. And, of course, this humble professor is still the most powerful unicorn in Equestria, so she’s rather unimpressed that somepony is underestimating her.

Anyway, done in 4 hours with my 2H-HB-2B trio.

MLP: FiM – Filly Twi’s Flutter-800

Oh, no! Robots have taken over the future and are sending assassins back in time to take out Twilight! Don’t worry, though, Flutter-800 will protect her.

This is my first submission for the Artist Training Grounds’ week 30 theme: draw a pony from the future. For whatever reason, the theme immediately inspired me to Terminator. My original plan was to just ponify the Arnold T-800, but then I thought it might be neat to have the T-800 be modeled after one of Twi’s friends. So I let the owlbot choose two of the main six at random for me. I rolled Fluttershy. Twice. But because I was in a goofy mood, I went with it. So here she is, the Flutter-800 here to protect filly Twi.

This was a 3.5 hour effort using my 2H-HB-2B trio.

MLP: FiM – Twilight the Nuzzly

Twilight is a pretty physically affectionate pony, giving out quite a few nuzzles over the course of both seasons. Thinking about that got me to wondering what it would be like to be on the receiving end of one of her nuzzles. Which got me drawing. So here she is: Twi leaning in for a nice little pony nuzzle.

During the drawing, I found myself wondering a few times if I really should have done this on 90lb. paper (as opposed to my usual 70 lb.). There were a few spots that I was trying to darken, but the paper was spent as far as layers go.

I spent about 5 hours on this one, using the 2H-HB-2B trio.

MLP: FiM – Kuroi’s Shading and Texturing Guide Part 2

After some thought, I realized I didn’t cover everything in the last guide. So this is my third submission for the Artist Training Grounds’ week 29 theme: draw a guide on how to draw ponies.

The general steps are still mostly the same: texture lightly to map out the contours -> darken.

EYES
For the whites, I tend to use a texture similar to the horn. That is, without lifting my pencil. Note that the lash part of the lid may need to be redarkened to contrast it from the darkened whites (and you might notice I didn’t quite redarken all areas enough in the guide).

For the Iris, I do short, horizontalish (still curving to the contour) strokes with my 2B. I leave a bit of space in between on the initial mapping. The second part isn’t quite darkening perse, as the 2B should leave the first part pretty dark already. I usually fill the gasp here, letting the length be slightly more erratic than the first round. This should cause some white to be left around the pupil and bolstering the 3D effect.

For the pupil, I just straight up fill it in with 2B. It may take a couple layers to get it as dark as it appears, though.

WINGS
This applies to whether they’re extended or not and is kind of my newest development. For the liens I fully darken the down, but hold back a bit on the longer feathers. For the first step I apply light shading to the down, using the same short, tight strokes as I do for the coat. For the second part, I darken the down, but for the longer feathers I run a bunch of lines perpendicular to the lines from the first. I make the part that actually crosses the step one lines really dark and hold back a bit for the actual surface of the feather.

EARS
I treat the outer portion as part of the coat, but the inner portion I tend to texture like the bangs/mane/tail. That is, longer strokes, single direction. Then the second step is darkening as usual.

MLP: FiM – Kuroi’s Shading and Texturing Guide

This is my second submission for the Artist Training Grounds’ week 29 theme: draw a guide on how to draw ponies. Because I received some strong hints that I should show off my methods for shading, I decided to do a second guide (this was, again, a little difficult, because my methods tend to be fairly chaotic). And I’m using Twilight against because she is awesome pony.

The first thing I do after a sketch is done is take my 2B and darken the lines (see upper left, but ignore the numbers for now). I will generally lay off a bit on the hair, especially where the streaks are concerned (or colour transitions in Dashie’s case).

For shading and texturing itself, I tend to do whole regions at a time and generally follow ye olde back to front, left to right methodology. The following numbered list is roughly how I’d shade this portrait:
1) Neck
2) Eye (white, then iris, then pupil)
3) Face
4) Mane
5) Ear
6) Bangs
7) Horn

Now for texturing and shading, I typically follow a two step process: texturing lightly and then shading to dark the textures as needed. There’s 3 different ways I shade, which I’ll detail below.

COAT (I & II)
Drawing ponies to be 3D can be a little difficult, especially given how different their forms are from real equines and the show style only half lending itself to giving them depth. When I’m texturing (I), I’ll try to feel out the contours by doing short, tight strokes that usually start at the outline. The furry texture pretty much comes naturally from mapping things out. Once that’s all worked out, I’ll darken the more shadowy areas (II). Almost all my shading these days is done with my HB. I’ll usually use my 2B to darken a few key spots, though.

HAIR (A & B)
This tends to be less directionally complex than the coat. I use longer strokes here. If my pencil has started blunting by this point, I sharpen it, because the texture requires a fairly fine point. I usually let myself get a little bit messy every few strokes as some unevenness makes the hair look more natural. For differences in colour (Twi, Dashie, and Rarity to an extent), I’ll make use of the full range of my HB and 2B. For example, with Twi, I stroke very lightly with the HB for her pink, heavily for the purple and then swap to the 2B for the dark blue-purple of the rest of her mane. Once that’s all worked out, step (B) is just darkening again.

HORN (i & ii)
This is actually the same texture I use for most hard surface props whenever I do partial or full scenery. For this, I don’t really lift my pencil off the paper except to change angles or when I’m trying to get really light strokes. I’ll basically blend as much as possible while trying to also do a smooth transition between the highlighted spot and the darkest. Step (ii) is again to darken things up.

And that’s about it. Most of my secrets are in the open now.

MLP: FiM – Art Trade – Butter Whip On A Cloud

This is my end of an art trade with I-PLUSHIE. She asked me to draw her OC, Butter Whip, on a cloud, so that’s what I did. Monochroming her did some strange and interesting things. Namely that I somehow managed to make her look like Twi, Dashie and Pinkie all at the same time. I tried having her stick her tongue on like in the reference I was working from, but that changed the expression entirely and not really in a good way.

So far, this is hands down, the strangest and most difficult hair I’ve worked with (yes, even more than Luna). I’d say my interpretation turned out pretty good and should be fitting to the OC’s name.

This one ran me about 3 hours with the 2H-HB-2B trio.

MLP: FiM – NATG 2012 Day 2 – Dusky In Training

This will be my submission for the NATG 2012 day 2 theme: draw a pony in training whenever their process isn’t melting down anymore.

After seeing what the theme was, I knew exactly what I had to do. There was no way for me to resist. So poor Dusky gets to be concerned about the methods involved in this training.

Took me about 3 hours to do this one. Ponies standing on their hind legs are a pain to draw. Despite that, it was still faster than yesterday. I even touched up the dark spots a bit more. Done with the usual 2H-HB-2B trio.

I may have gotten slightly carried away. And by that, I mean slightly modifying Make a Man Out of You to ponify it so I could add it as flavour to go with this (I do realize the parts meant to characterize each of the soldiers won’t make sense here half the time, but eh). >.>

Anyway, enjoy:

Let’s get down to business
Bring our might to bare
Did they send me fillies
When I asked for mares?
You’re the saddest bunch
I ever met
But you can bet
Before we’re through
Missy, I’ll make a mare
out of you

Tranquil as a forest
But on fire within
Once you find your center
you are sure to win
You’re a spineless, pale
pathetic lot
And you haven’t got a clue
Somehow I’ll make a mare
out of you

I’m never gonna catch
my breath
Say good-bye to those
who knew me
Boy, was I a fool in school
for cutting gym
This girl’s got ’em
scared to death
Hope she doesn’t see
right through me
Now I really wish that I
knew how to swim

(Be a mare)
We must be swift as
the coursing river
(Be a mare)
With all the force
of a great typhoon
(Be a mare)
With all the strength
of a raging fire
Mysterious as the
dark side of the moon

Time is racing toward us
till the Grifs arrive
Heed my every order
and you might survive
You’re unsuited for
the rage of war
So pack up, go home
you’re through
How could I make a mare
out of you?

(Be a mare)
We must be swift as
the coursing river
(Be a mare)
With all the force
of a great typhoon
(Be a mare)
With all the strength
of a raging fire
Mysterious as the
dark side of the moon

(Be a mare)
We must be swift as
the Coursing river
(Be a mare)
With all the force
of a great typhoon
(Be a mare)
With all the strength
of a raging fire
Mysterious as the
dark side of the moon
