MLP: FiM – NATG 2012 Day 1 – Armoured Dusky

Weee, NATG is back for a bit, so it’s time to show off what I’ve learned since June. This is my submission for theme 1: draw an armoured pony.

Given the tone of the little RP blip that went with the theme post, I decided to start with a personal touch and use Dusky Down.

She’s a pretty practical girl, so I went with some plain light weight leather-esque type armour (so nothing ornate here). Kept her scarf and added a bandanna (similar to her Pony Emblem design) to give her that speedy skirmisher type of look.

Was in a bit of a slump today (for personal reasons), so this took way longer than it should have. Looking at about 4 hours, with the sketch taking an extra hour because I suddenly sucked at hind legs again. I could have really used that time to touch up the shading. Oh, well, it wouldn’t be a NATG submission without frantically rushing around near the deadline, would it? Done with my 2H-HB-2B trio.

MLP: FiM – Kuroi’s Terribly Messy Pony Guide

This is my first (and possibly only, given the theme) submission to the Artist Training Grounds’ week 29 theme: draw a guide on how to draw ponies.

My, um, “technique” is usually pretty chaotic, so it was a little bit of a challenge coming up with something coherent. I don’t always do the steps in this guide, but it’s the route I most often take, so I decided to go with it.

Anyway, there wasn’t enough room to write the legend onto the guide itself, so read it top to bottom, left to right and refer to the below for the numbered stuff:
1 – Head
2- Action Line
3, 4 – Body Circles (note the overlap)
5 – Neck and body
6 – I apparently can’t count, so it doesn’t exist
7 – Foreleg guidelines and joints
8 – Hind leg guidelines and joints
9 – Form the forelegs around the guides
10 – Form the hind legs around the guides
11 – Add ear
12 – Add nose
13 – Add eye*
13.5 – This is usually where I check proportions and stuff before cleaning and detailing. Note the eyeballed measurements I give.
14 – Clean by erasing all the guides (kneaded erasers work wonders)
15 – Detail*

Also remember that the guidelines are just guides. If something looks a bit off, some minor adjustments to the guidelines may need to be made on the fly.

*These features tends to be less clean cut, even among the main six. Basically, a reference or memorization will be required to get the details of your drawn pony to look proper. I’ll use Twi as an example:
-Her bangs are bowl shaped, which will also curve the way her streaks go
-The top of the mane will usually fall around her cheek and extends down close to her chest
-The start of her tail has a slightly larger volume than other ponies, so it’s going to look big
-The streak closest to her snout will be purple, followed by pink
-Her eyes have one almond shaped end: the end that stops near her snout
-She has six lashes per eye: 3 on top, curved in a somewhat girly way (I overdid it a bit in this guide) and 3 on the bottom
-The main star of her cutie mark sits pretty much dead center of her flank. With the smaller starbursts, there are 3 on the side closest to her head, 2 closer to her rump.

However, I’d like to mention that the biggest part about learning to draw is repetition. Draw ponies, ponies, ponies and more ponies. As they become more familiar, drawing them will be faster and feel more natural. Don’t believe me? Just look at my drawings from June and my drawings from now. That’s improvement almost entirely through sheer pony spam.

MLP: FiM – Fluttershy at Work

This is my third submission for the Artist Training Grounds’ week 28 theme: draw a pony working. A pretty straight forward one here. Although I didn’t really feel like drawing Angel. So I decided on a kitty, but I didn’t feel like drawing Opal either. So instead I just whipped together a random generic cat.

This is probably the fastest I’ve done such a heavily shaded piece in a while, if not ever (105 mins). Did it with the usual 2H-HB-2B trio. Almost no references this time, but I had to double check her cutie mark since I forgot where each butterfly sits.

MLP: FiM – The Morning Shift

Uh, looks like somepony was up too late last night.

This is my second submission for the Artist Training Grounds’ week 28 theme: draw a pony working. Well, Dashie is kind of working. She’s just… uh, slightly passed out on the job, that’s all.

This is another one of those strange poses that my mind decided I was should do, yet again, when I was aiming to do something simple. Still someone managed it in a little less than 2 hours, though. Done using my 2H-HB-2B trio.

MLP: FiM – Filly Twi Is Doing Work

In more ways than one! Yea, it’s a lame joke, I know.

Anyway, first submission for the Artist Training Grounds’ week 28 theme: draw a pony doing work. Twi’s doing two kinds (yay).

The pose was a little weird, but I think I got it figured out. Done in 2 hours with my 2H-HB-2B trio.

MLP: FiM – Filly Twi’s New Year

This is my third submission for the Artist Training Grounds’ week 27 theme: draw a pony celebrating New Year’s Eve. Everyone talks about how Celestia is such a mother figure to Twi, which is true, but that also makes me a little sad, because Twi happens to have a real mom too. So I decided Twi’s parents need more love since they tend to get forgotten. Because I drew this zoomed way too far in, have some Twi and parents staring at some off screen fireworks.

Doing the layering on the sketch and then on the shading was a huge pain, but definitely worth it. Ran me about 3.5 hours altogether using my 2H-HB-2B trio.

MLP: FiM – Cutie Mar Crusader Wha- Oh Dear

This is my second submission for the Artist Training Grounds’ week 27 theme: draw a pony celebrating New Year’s Eve. Well, here’s three ponies all attempting to celebrate… and get their cutie marks. I’m sure we all know how it’s going to end.

Due to the sheer pony count, this one ran me 4.5 hours with my 2H-HB-2B trio.

I tried to make the fur a bit more muted this time such that their coats look smoother. Apple Bloom’s pose also bothers me a bit, even though my guidelines placed her last leg completely out of view.

Oh and first drawing of 2012 (even though it was started in 2011)! Yay.

MLP: FiM – Ask Equestria Contribution 001 – Luna Calls Foul

For those of you who haven’t visited Ask Equestria yet (http://ask-equestria.tumblr.com/), I’m posting my master drawings that I use for the posts to show what you’re all missing out on. I’m only going to be uploading here about a week or so after I post to the Tumblr, though, so if you want to see the new stuff, head on over.

MLP: FiM – New Year’s Eve Party Cannon

This if my first submission for the Artist Training Grounds’ week 27 theme: draw a pony celebrating New Year’s Eve. Well, she’s not quite there, but Pinkie’s clearly very excited and prepared for it.

Done in about 2.5 hours with the 2H-HB-2B trio. No references at all this time, either.
