No Contest Creations

I felt like doing something a little wacky tonight, so I went with 4th wall breaking Pinkie Pie. Originally, I was going to do a “FOR-EVER!” gag, but then the singing telegram idea came to me and I decided I would rather do that one. So I guess Pinkie’s inviting everyone to a party.

I had some trouble with proportions when I was sketching this one out. Something about the pose was throwing me off, not to mention I had to worry about perspective. I think I got it all ironed out in the end, though. The colouring job took about as long as doing a whole pony without any accessories thanks to the hat and clown nose. I’m glad I didn’t decide to do the tux or any of the other outfits for that matter. Doing this also forced me to work with more layers than I’m used to, so that’s a plus.

Tonight’s coloured drawing is of Rainbow Dash. I thought finding something unusual to draw for Dashie would be impossible, but at least according to Google Images, there aren’t even very many pictures of her with her ball. Of course, this may have something to do with only two episodes containing this activity and for only about 10 seconds at a time.

Anyway, I’m not 100% sure I got the pose right. I mean, it looks like it should be right, but something is nagging at me. The colouring took a little bit longer than usual since I had to accomodate for all the colours in her mane and tail.

So I’ve realized that aside from all those OC ponies, Twilight Sparkle has actually really been stealing the show when it comes to coloured drawings I’ve done. So I’ve decided to draw the rest of the main six in colour at least once. Today I decided to go with Fluttershy. Now I’ve seen just about every kind of expression from her, so I wasn’t going to be able to do anything really original, so I had to find something that gave me some person investment. Then it hit me: I’ve been rewatching the season and I noticed that there’s actually an awful lot of moments where Fluttershy looks like she’s getting pretty mad, but never expresses it before another pony changes the subject or interrupts in some other way. So tonight Fluttershy gets to vent.

I wanted to make her look pretty riled, but I didn’t want to cross over into Psychoshy territory, Other than that, it’s some pretty basic sketch work and trace work so I could practice. And once again I went with non-standard wings.

This is the end result of a bit of a daisy chain. I was inspired by Lonely Island’s Jack Sparrow to make this parody which then inspired me to do a piece of art to go with it.

This is my third submission for the DA Artist Training Group’s week 4 theme: draw a pony inspired by a song. And boy, did I ever have fun with this one.

Ponifying Bolton was a little bit hard just because I wasn’t going to be able to use any clothing to represent him, since he was going to be wearing a Twilight Sparkle costume. I ended up making it a bit roughshod on purpose in order to show off his hair. I did consider colouring him white and then spray painting lavender on, but I decided I’d already gotten the point across with the other stuff. Other than that, it was a really easy Twilight Sparkle trace with a few quirks.

Some time ago I was listening to Lonely Island’s Jack Sparrow and realized the way the song was worded, I could easily make them all sound like bronies. So I did. The end result features Twilight Sparkle in good old Jack’s place, with a few references to other shows, one of which the entirety of my knowledge comes from the TVTropes entry for it.

This is my second submission for the DA Artist Training Group’s week 4 theme: draw a pony inspired by a song.

Well, Pinkie to the rescue again with her 4th wall breaking to keep my comic within theme by being inspired to action by the battle theme that only she could hear (I was actually playing some game battle music from when I started drawing the panel with Pinkie onward. I believe the playlist was on Deperate Struggle from the FF13 OST). I wasn’t particularly on the ball tonight. I messed up the hair a lot, especially, for some reason, on Fluttershy. I got it mostly fixed eventually, but it took a while. And I’m pretty sure Dashie’s buck kick still looks off. I haven’t drawn faraway ponies in a while and I think it really shows at the start of the aerial battle. I couldn’t put any kind of detail on the wings without them mutating into something unrecognizable. Way more action than dialogue today too and this trend will likely continue for the next couple pages that I do unless the theme drastically alters the direction for me.

“But this isn’t very musical at all!” one might say. Well, I’ll admit it isn’t, but the theme is (as always) open to interpretation, so I drew Twilight here while inspired by a single song. Finding that song was a bit tough (I randommed through 250 songs on my iPod until I found something that inspired me). I wanted to draw a happy Twilight today and Guardia Millennial Fair (from the Chrono Trigger OST) just happened to come at the right time. As a result, Twilight is cutting loose and letting her inner filly out as she prances around with a bundle of balloons. 😀

This is my second attempt at an entirely digital drawing and I definitely have to say it turned out much better than my first, but I’m still stumbling around trying to get stuff figured out. The lines are kind of rigid and the last time I manually fixed up every pixel on the outline, that was a 2 hour job on its own. The perspective was a little annoying because I had trouble finding the right places to draw her hind hooves. The colouring was actually fairly fast, since I remembered to leave the outlines black until the end so I could set the threshold high for the fill colours (I realize this isn’t really the best way and I plan on exprimenting with a recommended technique next time).
