MLP: FiM – Ask Dusky 022 – May Be Dramatized

Seriously, though, see this old post for the real answer. >;)

I had way too much fun with this one. Dusky kind of ran off on me here (as my characters are wont to do the more development they receive). Apparently she can be a bit of a troll.

This is doubling up as my first submission for the Artist Training Grounds’ week 48 theme: draw a triumphant pony. And, well, that last panel is pretty much playing the theme about as straight as can be.

MLP: FiM – Dusky’s Prom Dress

This is my submission for the pony prom tumblr event. The overall design was pretty much decided on a whim, just brainstorming and sketching whatever back when I was at Comic-Con. I thought I might modify it, but sketching it again, I just felt it fit.

Since I subconsciously ripped off traditional Chinese dresses, I decided to stick with red, which contrasts against Dusky’s eyes anyway, so that was a pretty easy one. I was debating betwen silver and golden yellow for the trimming and in the end I decided red and golden yellow must be tradition for a reason and stuck with it. The rose barrette (almost wanted to do an earring, but something about the barrette just felt more right) and clasp are white so they stand out a bit more.

Come ask me questions at http://ask-dusky-down.tumblr.com/.

EDIT: Because of the way things worked out this week (week of June 1, 2012), plus having done this just before the week 49 theme: design a pony outfit started, I’m doubling it up as the first submission.

MLP: FiM – Double Trouble

This is my third submission for the Artist Training Grounds’ week 47 theme: draw a tenebrous pony. This time I’m playing on the obscure/unknown part of the definition. It’s pretty hard for anything to fit that more than the god of chaos. Q is also in there in part because Lauren Faust quoted him as an inspiration for Discord and in part because I’m going to see if I can’t get this signed by John de Lancie at BronyCon.

This is another one of those 10+ hour drawings (I kind of lost track on this one). I spent about 3/4 the time on half of it. One guess as to which half that was. >.> Seriously, I regretted my decision to go semi-realistic about an hour in. Because man are lips hard to make look good.

EDIT: Well, 2 more hours of effort and I’m not really much closer to his likeness. Still uploading the revised copy because the face is far more defined.

MLP: FiM – Mysterious Mare Do Well

This is my second submission for the Artist Training Grounds’ week 47 them: draw a tenebrous pony. I recently rewatched Mysterious Mare Do Well and was in the mood try something a little more artsy than usual, so this kind of just fell into place. Ended up being pretty good blending practice too.

MLP: FiM – Ask Dusky Down 021 – Ninja

I have no idea what you’re talking about.

Another master sheet for the questions I’m answering on http://ask-dusky-down.tumblr.com/. Come ask me questions!

Also doubling this up as my first submission for the Artist Training Grounds’ week 47 theme: draw a tenebrous pony. Because dark coated pony and ninja question. Eeeyup.

MLP: FiM – Birthday Party Streamer

This is my third submission for the Artist Training Grounds’ week 46 theme: draw a pony at a celebration. Seems I also forgot to draw Twi in her birthday dress. At first I was going to do the dancing scene, but everyone knows that. Poking through the episode again, I noticed that even though the focus is on Rarity, Twi’s often doing a bunch of stupidly adorable things. So I started paying more attention to those and decided to go with my own rendition of Twi blowing a party streamer (while also wearing her dress, of course).

This one was a quick 2 hour drawing because I thought I had less time then I ended up with. Oh, well. Better safe than sorry.

MLP: FiM – Dusky Style Experiment

I decided to experiment and slide the proportions more toward a Terran pony style. I still retained elements of the MLPs, though. This was horrifyingly uncanny valley when I first sketched it out. Once I detailed her to add depth, though, it became significantly less so.

A Simple Rose

A non-pony related drawing? What is this madness? Anyway, just a quick 30 minute drawing as a more personalized card.

MLP: FiM – Singing Twi

This is my second submission for the Artist Training Grounds’ week 46 theme: draw a pony at a celebration. Ever since the finale I wanted to draw Twi in her best mare outfit and this was pretty much the perfect opportunity.

The outfit did give me a bit of trouble, especially that head wreath thing. The curls in her mane were really fun to detail, though. Fun fact: while I was detailing her, the curls initially made Twi look a bit like Sweetie Belle.

MLP: FiM – Summer Sun Celestia

This is my first submission for the Artist Training Grounds’ week 46 theme: draw a pony at a celebration. Wow, I spent too many days on this. It’s another roughly 15 hour (give or take) drawing, this time with plans to try to get a signature from each other Lauren Faust and Nicole Oliver when I got to BronyCon.

Nearly a third of my time was spent fussing with the initial pose. It’s basically what Celestia does in Cutie Mark Chronicles at the Summer Sun Celebration, but I didn’t like the angle the show presents, so in all my brilliance, I decided I’d try to figure it out from a different angle. Yeaaaaa, almost wish I hadn’t. Mostly because I pretty much had zero references to go off of, so I was winging it almost the entire time. But what’s done is done, I guess. I initially wanted to try to fit that ornamental sun prop in as well, but it would have prevented me from detailing Celestia at the resolution I wanted to.

What was probably most interesting about this was how reversed the lighting is compared to what I normally do. That is, instead of heavy shadows, this was tons of light, practically to the point of washing out some parts. Which meant I basically spent a bunch of time drawing parts of her and then hours dabbing with a kneaded eraser it to get it just right.

All and all, I’m pretty happy with it, even if I probably wouldn’t name it among my best.
