This is a culmination of frustration with http://fox-e.deviantart.com/ for his indecision in the design of his ponysona. Hopefully this helps push him in a direction.
There was only one thing he’d really decided on: he prefers mares, so I designed a mare.
The coat colour I took from a few dreams he mentioned having where he was a red pony. And red turned out to be incredibly hard to work with here. It threatened to overpower every other colour, even though it seemed like it should be fine when I was sampling. Basically she ended up looking like some kind of pony blood demon and I had to dial it back a lot. I can’t help but wonder if magenta would have been a better choice.
From the same set of dreams, I chose unicorn for him because that was the first dream that came to mind when I thought back to the conversation.
For the mane, bangs and tail design, I borrowed from the style used by his IRC stats page avatar. I tamed them a bit, more or less just smoothing out the curves. I decided to go with a fox colour scheme here, so went with white and orange. Unfortunately, the white doesn’t stand out very well on white paper. I tried blending in cloud blue, but I wasn’t sure if my scanner was going to pick that up very well either. So I ended up having to shade in black and may have overshaded a bit.
The eye colour was just an arbitrary selection of one of the stereotypical fox eye colours.
The hair berette is a direct result of quizzing him. I worked my way to this from a few accesories and then, unfortunately, when presented with a choice of flowers, feathers or jewels, he couldn’t decide. My initial design incorporated all three, but it was way too busy, so I cut it down to a flower with a jewel in the center. Went with blue to match her eyes.
Finally, the cutie mark has a bit of a double meaning. Basically he mentioned often ending up hyper focused and with nothing else to go on, I tried to find a way to represent that. A magnifying glass is the best I could come up with. As for the double meaning, since a magnifying glass is often also associated with mystery, it could also be said his cutie mark is a mystery, since he couldn’t give me a straight answer when asked.
Anyway, Fox-E, if you’re reading this, hope you like her and no, I’m not coming up with a name for you. >.>
