MLP: FiM – Angry Twilight Style Experiment

She’s probably angry that I tried this strange experiment on her. I went with a pretty basic pose so I could do some stylistic experimentation. I went with an angry expression because I don’t think I’ve drawn and angry Twi yet.

Used the 2H-HB-2B trio here. Took roughly 2 hours.

I used mostly vertical lines here, only angling them by about 15 degrees tops when I had to. The effect is interesting, but I don’t know how much I like it. I mean, it worked out fairly well for her face, but the rest of her coat it looks pretty weird for. I was going a little more aggressive on the shading again, trying to create a more gradual shift, although the whole vertical line thing wasn’t particularly conducive to that goal. I extended that to the hair too, where I shortened the highlights a bit.

MLP: FiM – A Gate Has Opened at Fluttershy’s Cottage

This is my third submission for the Artist Training Grounds’ week 20 theme: draw a pony solving a mystery. This one is a doozy, as Twilight would put it. I admit, if I had to choose a pony investigator, Fluttershy would not be my first pick. But she’s whom I had the colours for so, uh… good luck, Fluttershy?

So I was really excited when I realized my hodge podge of pencil crayons had relatively reasonable matches for Fluttershy (the tones are perhaps a tad too dark, exacerbated for my scanner deciding to pick the up as even darker colours). I laid out the whole sketch and everything, started colouring. And then realized I forgot to account for Fluttershy’s eye colour. So I desperatedly went through my greens and blues, trying to find some combo that looked all right. Finally settled on deep green and aquamarine. It turned out surprisingly well, so bullet dodged, I guess. The portal is kind of meh, but it gets the point across. I’d definitely have to rethink it if I did it again. The grass was thrown in at the last moment, because why not?

Surprisingly, this only ran me about 90 minutes to complete and that included trying to figure out her eye colour.

MLP: FiM – Rarity Sitting Commission

This is the first of two Rarities I have been commissioned to draw for a friend to give as gifts (he’s getting the hard copies). I was hoping for a little more variety, but apparently both giftees have Rarity as their favourite.

Anyway, this took a little shy of 5 hours to do and as a result, is among the best pencil work I’ve done to date. Done with the usual 2H-HB-2B trio using my older shading style.

MLP: FiM – Makeover Spell

This is my second submission for the Artist Training Grounds’ week 20 theme: draw a pony solving a mystery. I’m pushing it a bit this time, since I didn’t do a comic, but Twilight is solving the mystery of what might happen if she tried mimicking the makeover spell Rarity used in Boast Busters. In short, I wanted an excuse to give Twi a makeover. >.>

Anyway, it took 2 hours to do this, which is pretty good all in all, since I designed her hair and outfit on the fly. I tried colour again while still maintaining my tried and true method of shading, which mostly worked. The last drawing I had used sky magenta for her coat because I didn’t think I had lavender. And then it turned out I did, so I gave that a go. Looks great in real life. Digital, my scanner thinks it’s a darkish purple (rage!).

MLP: FiM – Happy Twilight Colour Shading

Well, yesterday got me wanting to try pencil crayons with a full on drawing, so I went ahead and broke them out again. I was curious as to what would happen if I shaded her in a similar fashion to when I do normal pencilling and the result is, well, something I almost might as well have traditionally coloured. So yea, not entirely sure about this style experiment.

I was really on a roll here, though, as this only took me about 90 minutes overall. It only took me about 10 minutes to sketch this out with my 2H. I then used a combination of pencil crayons and my 2B (it hardly got used, just mostly for the eyes). My black pencil crayon is really bad quality, so I think I am going to have to look for a new set, since that’s my only black.

MLP: FiM – MacGuyvered Papercraft Twilight

This is my submission for the Artist Training Grounds’ week 20 bonus theme: paper ponies.

So when this was announced, I was unprepared. My printer ink is low and I only have the low grade computer paper, so printing one of those pro papercrafts was probably out. And I didn’t have any construction paper. Naturally I decided I wouldn’t go to the store tomorrow to pick up supplies, but scrounge what I had around my room. MacGuyver mode go!

What I came up with:
-A handful of flimsy green, blue and red note paper
-A stack of recipe cards
-A roll of clear plastic tape
-My yogurt container full of a mish mash of different pencil crayon brands

So over around 100 minutes I drew up, cut out, coloured and taped together a flimsy Twilight Sparkle. I’ll be honest, it wasn’t even among the best designs I’ve come up with, but amazingly, she stands. And she looks all right from the one side. That counts for something, right? XD

MLP: FiM – Pinkie Knows

This is my first submission for the Artist Training Grounds’ week 20 theme: draw a pony solving a mystery. Well, Pinkie’s solved the mystery all right, she’s on to you, you dastardly person/pony/other species, you!

Anyway, somehow this was a 70 minute Pinkie, which is way faster than usual for me. Pose may be slightly off, but I’m not sure.

Done with my 2H-HB-2B trio using my hybrid shading style.

MLP: FiM – Twilight Gazing Up

Well, this was supposed to be a quick pose practice drawing, but it gave me a lot of trouble and I ended up spending a bit over 2.5 hours on it. Used the 2H-HB-2B trio and my hybrid shading style (although I was a little tighter on the line spacing than usual).

Basically I’ve hardly ever done rear views, so I was going for that. I chose Twilight because I’m most familiar with her and I knew of a couple references I could easily find where the pose is really close to what I was trying to do. Anyway, the legs gave me a surprising amount of trouble. They look completely different from the back. I also had to stare at her plot for a while, since I was having trouble getting it to look correct. Aside from that, I think I messed the proportions up ever so slightly.

MLP: FiM – Twilight Waking Up

Was running a bit short on time tonight, so I did this quick 75 minute drawing of Twi instead of the more extravagant piece I had planned.

Since I never got to do Twi with bed head before, I decided to do one of those just waking up shots. I chose this pose because it was simple, but different from the stock stuff I tend to fall into when I’m in a hurry. I also wanted to work on setting a bit, so I threw together the window.

Anyway, no references here, just kind of improvised her bed head and rolled with it. Done using 2H-HB-2B trio, hybrid shading style.

MLP: FiM – Dashtache

This is my third submission for the Artist Training Grounds’ week 19 theme: draw a pony pranked. Tonight’s victim is Rainbow Dash and it looks like the tables have turned on her from last night.

Pose was a little tough, but definitely easier than my last few. Trying to differentiate the colours in Dashie’s mane is always a total pain in greyscale, but I think I’m starting to get something resembling a technique for it down.

Done in a little under 2.5 hours using the 2H-HB-2B trio and my hybrid shading style.
