MLP: FiM – Make Some Friends

This is my second submission for the Artist Training Grounds’ week 15 theme: draw a pony doing something she doesn’t like.

Using this 30 minute sketch (yay for reference pics), I go back in time. Twlight is on her way to make some friends. Even though she doesn’t want to.

Silly filly, if only you knew… 😛

MLP: FiM – Rainbow Dash Diving

More pose practice. I haven’t really done too many flying shots, so I decided to do a 40 minute sketch of Dashie diving. I think I screwed up her right foreleg, but otherwise it went rather smoothly.

MLP – FiM: Twilight “Smug” Sparkle

Well, here’s another drawing that was going to be a 40 minute sketch and then I got carried away and spent 3.5 hours overall in order to get it properly shaded. Anyway, wanted to draw Twi with a “That all you got?” expression on her face, so have a smug Twi.

Played around with lighting a bunch more to try to give her even more shape. I succeeded in some places, not so sure about others. I think I really got her snout, mane and tail to turn out good this time around.

Made with the usual 2H-HB-2B trio.

MLP: FiM – Rarity Digging

Note that this is the completed version of yesterday’s Rarity sketch.

This is my first submission to the Artist Training Grounds’ week 15 theme: draw a pony doing something she/he doesn’t like.

Well, I needed Rarity practice and had thought about doing a dirty Rarity, but that’s so generic, so I narrowed that down to getting her hoof dirty and trying not to ruin her ‘precious pony pedi’ as the Diamond Dogs so aptly put it.

I’m starting to have to not work as hard to get the more gradual shading transitions, so I’m happy with that. I think my hair shines are starting to look a little more natural too. Probably gonna have to start putting more light sources in again, though. Having half the pony’s body in total shadow is starting to get old.

Done in about 4.5 hours with the 2H-HB-2B trio.

MLP: FiM – Digging Rarity (Unfinished)

This is an unfinished Rarity sketch. It was initially going to just be more pose practice, but the sketch turned out well enough that I think I want to give her a proper shading job. Unfortunately it’s late and I’m feeling a little burned out from getting overeager and staying up until 3AM working on these, so in an effort to stop myself from crashing, I’m holding back a bit more. So I’m posting the sketch now as a little preview and doing the shading tomorrow.

MLP: FiM – Sleeping Twilight Sketch

Because there’s no such thing as too much happy Twi. This is a 20 minute pose practice piece.

MLP: FiM – Fluttershy Attempts to be a Ninja

This is my third submission for the Artist Training Grounds’ week 14 theme: Pirates vs Ninja.

Fluttershy is attempting to be a ninja and uh… well, A for effort?

If anyone hasn’t guessed yet, this idea was based on a gag from S2E2 where Fluttershy is supposed to subdue Dashie and, well… fails miserably because she’s too nice for her own good.

Anyway, this took about 4 hours using the 2H-HB-2B trio. I was generally paying extra attention to getting that contrast down. Plus I tried to fit in a bunch of extra hair shine, which seemed to work out quite well. I think I also managed to get the more complex wings to look a lot better than usual here too. I think I could have donw a better job with costume design, but overall I’m fairly happy with the results.

MLP: FiM – Any Port in a Storm Friend-off Art – Arrival

This is my submission for the first United Training Grounds’ Friend-off.

Anyway, I decided to draw an early scene from JqlGirl’s RariDash fic, Any Port in A Storm. It’s incredibly sweet and full of d’aws.

This monstrousity ran me about 6 hours to finish up. Carousel Boutique was incredibly annoying to draw mostly because my reference screenshots had conflicting features. I ended up just using the side view from S2E2 since it was closest to the perspective I wanted. Aside from that, I also tried to visually draw the rain and it kept looking terrible. Then I realized the way I’d drawn Dashie, plus the water drops falling off of her already gave enough info. So rather than risk screwing up my drawing with further attempts, I let it be.

This is among one of my best (and weirdest) shading jobs. Rarity was very interesting to figure out and Dashie was fun. Plus I finally remembered to put actual shadows on the ground.

Drawn with 2H, shaded with HB, 2B and 4B.

MLP: FiM – Happy Rarity Sketch

Out of the main six, I tend to neglect Rarity the most. Probably because back in the day her hair really intimidated me. I still don’t really like drawing it, but it’s perfectly manageable now. Anyway, when I do draw her, it’s usually that standard half view profile pose, so I decided to not cop out. This is another 40 minute sketch.

The proportions are definitely out on this one. I think I spent too much time worrying about the hair and ended up not paying as much attention to the body, so the legs are a bit short. The face came out pretty nice, though and I think the hair is more or less in the right place (I couldn’t find a good reference picture for the tail, so it’s 90% guess work).

MLP: FiM – Ponified FF6 Shadow and Interceptor

This is my second submission to the Artist Training Grounds’ week 14 theme: Pirates vs Ninja.

Well, other people have done FF6 for themes in the past and as a big fan of it (it’s my favourite FF and ranks among my top 5 favourites for RPGs in general), it was kind of shameful that I hadn’t at least done something for a crossover. Anyway, this theme presented an opportunity, so this is a 1 hour sketch where I ponified Shadow the ninja and FiM styled Interceptor (his dog for those who don’t know).

I never realized how much gold trimming and random flowing cloth thingies Shadow had until I took a good hard look at the Amano art for this crossover. I can’t believe he stayed hidden at all in the game. Anyway, I simplified it a lot to try to keep it in FiM style, so no crazy texturing. It was also kind of tough to get an intimidating expression on Interceptor’s face without making him look like an oddly shaped colt.
