MLP: FiM – Sentimental Twilight

Well, this is more shading practice that I spent a bit too long on. My own fault, though, since I arbitrarily chose a random placement for the light source and in conjunction with the pose, the drawing became quite difficult. I almost left the tears out when doing the initial sketch because Twilight looked pretty happy and adorable without them. However, I decided to stick with the original plan. The tears didn’t turn out great, but I guess at least i got to practice attempting them. The pose itself is from episode 2 where Twilight has discovered the wonders of friendship (yay!).

Anyway, I pretty much had to do the opposite of what I normally do shading wise, which threw me off a bit (the snout was back to kicking my butt here). The results are kind of weird, but I think it still more or less works. I have a feeling I may have neglected or misplaced some portions of the shading, though. I just can’t put my finger on it.

MLP: FiM – Bashful Rainbow Dash

More shading practice, but I decided to change things up again and let Twilight have a rest from modelling. So today I nabbed Dashie. I happened to notice this particular expression when rewatching The Cutie Mark Chronicles. She gets a short couple frames of bashfulness while Scootaloo is busy fangirling all over her. The blush isn’t part of the original pose, but I added it because I thought it would help ramp up her cuteness (not that she needs it, but I wanted to try and see anyway).

Overall, this is probably one of my best drawings. The shading is more gradual in most places and I think I’m getting better at determining how to guess where to shade in relation to a light source. Something about the bangs bugs me a bit, but I’m not entirely sure why.

MLP: FiM – Stranded in the Arctic

This is my third submission to the DA Artist Training Group’s week 7 theme: draw a pony chilling. This drawing features another scene from the admin coup role-play. The sole pony in the drawing is Nullh’s ponysona. And he appears to be having a bit of trouble. 😛

Anyway, this was a pretty quick drawing. The angle and Nullh’s really simple design let me draw him with few hitches. The background is mostly me messing around and still trying to figure out what I’m doing with most of these tools.

MLP: FiM – Twilight Is Baffled

Yay, more Twilight Sparkle. Because she’s awesome.

Anyway, this is more shading practice. I was originally going to go with the expression from when her mind snaps in Swarm of the Century, but the positioning was really similar to the last two I’ve done, so I went with a different kind of mind broken pose. This is Twilight’s reaction face to the Cutie Mark Crusaders in Showstoppers when they’re spouting some particularly inane stuff. Anyway, the main thing is that the ear, hair and snout are all in vastly different positions from before.

I may have been a bit overly aggressive with some of the really dark spots this time around. Particularly with the hair. However, I am rather happy with the way the shading turned out for the portion of her cheek near her hair.

MLP: FiM – Start of Nightmare Part 11

Yay, comic page. This is my second submission for the DA Artist Training Group’s week 7 theme: draw a pony chilling. This time, Pinkie Pie finds she’s being forced to chill out for while.

My tendency to draw Twilight is starting to really show here. The other ponies are still about 3-5 mins per sketch, but I’m at the point with Twilight where a speed sketch is about a 1 minute deal (although as can be seen, my speed sketching isn’t exactly… consistent between panels).

MLP: FiM – Muzzle Drawn Twilight

This is my submission for the DA Artist Training Group’s week 7 bonus theme: muzzle drawn ponies. Or to clarify, ponies drawn entirely with one’s mouth.

I used a 2H with a sandwich bag wrapped around it because I had nothing else. Ended up going through a decent wad of paper towel too. I’m pretty sure I drooled on Twilight at least five times.

Anyway, this was really tough to start with, but helped bring me back to some basic artist rules I’ve been cheating around, such as keeping one’s pencil on the paper for a continuous line instead of a whole bunch of small, rough strokes. Things got a lot easier once I figured out to actually think a bit like a pony and treat my balled hands like hooves to rest my chin on to brace it. As can be seen, I actually did some decently intricate stuff that way. Oh and for kicks, I signed it as though my ponysona had muzzle drawn it herself.

MLP: FiM – Passions (Fiction)

This is my submission for the DA Writer Training Group’s 4th theme: pony cliches. As I’m not able to follow as much of the community as I’d like, I ended up relying on some of the default cliches provided with theme’s blog post. There’s one main cliche here and technically a second, although the second was actually at least half coincidence. And no, I’m not saying which is which. Do note that some parts of this fic are sad and other parts are a little dark.

Despite not liking reading sad parts, I’m apparently prone to writing scenes like that, so that was a little painful. On the other hand, I’m fairly happy with how the piece as a whole has turned out. I debated making a few of the shorter scenes longer, but this fic was already going on 7 doc pages in length and I wasn’t sure how much value prolonging the scenes would add anyway.

MLP: FiM – Shaded Fillyshy

This is my first submission for the DA Artist Training Group’s 7th (geez, has it really been that long?) theme: draw a pony chilling.

No creative interpretation for this entry. Fillyshy is just hanging out, relaxing and looking shy… well, she originally looked shy in the sketch. Somehow in the shading process she became some combination of shy/sleepy/stoned. *shrug* Not that that will stop fillyshy from being cute, anyway.

This was my first time shading a pony body, so some of it came out a little rough, but I’m really happy with how easily the face came to me this time. I’m particularly proud of the portion of her hair blocking her other eye. The snout is something that gave me a lot of trouble with the last two portraits of Twilight, but this time, it took maybe a half dozen tries to get the right tone in the right place. I think I’m really starting to get the hang of this and damn if it isn’t fun (*insert Twilight style YESYESYES*)!

Edit: The fact that Fillyshy wasn’t looking what I drew in my sketchbook on some monitors has come to my attention, so I turned the brightness down on the picture in general. I guess that’ll teach me to be arrogant and not adjust for my mediocre scanner.

MLP: FiM – Twilight YESYESYES!

Another pose that I nabbed from the show, this time from The Cutie Mark Chronicles. This is the absolutely adorkable smile she has plastered on her face after she got a wee bit overexcited (if anyone reading this doesn’t know why, watch the episode, it’s a spoiler).

Because I found myself struggling to control the gradient on the 4B on the last portrait, I decided to see what happens if I do the majority of my shading in HB (I didn’t use the 4B at all and the 2H was used very sparingly). I had to work a lot harder on the hair, but for the other parts, having better control helped a lot. Some parts look a little rough and I’m still not entirely sure I’m doing them (and a couple of the parts that look okay) right, either. Despite that, I’m rather satisfied with how she turned out.
